With his experience as the nation’s chief law enforcement officer, Judge Gonzales provides guidance on corporate compliance matters and internal investigations. On issues ranging from white-collar fraud to doing business with foreign governments, he has the knowledge to help develop effective, comprehensive risk minimization strategies. Judge Gonzales was with President George W. Bush on September 11, 2001 as he began to formulate the nation’s response to the terrorist attacks against the United States. Having served during one of our nation’s most turbulent times, he offers a distinct perspective on homeland security and national security and the policies necessary for keeping America safe.
Thus, Judge Gonzales brings a unique combination of law enforcement and national security expertise to companies seeking to do business with the federal government and state and local entities.
Drawing on his experience as a Justice of the Supreme Court of Texas, Judge Gonzales brings clients the perspective of a former appellate judge. He provides assessments of appeals, works with counsel to perfect appellate briefing, and assists in preparing for oral arguments.
As Texas Secretary of State, Judge Gonzales was then-Governor Bush’s chief liaison to Mexico. He has maintained strong ties with high-level officials there as well as other countries in Central and South America, Europe and Asia. His extensive relationships, substantive policy background, and expertise in international law have prepared Judge Gonzales to provide valuable guidance to companies doing business abroad.

Judge Gonzales has served as a senior adviser at the highest levels of state and federal government. He is a problem solver who has dealt effectively with complicated and politically sensitive issues. The experience of leading a state agency and one of the country’s largest federal agencies, with a $25 billion budget and over 105,000 employees in 40 component divisions, gives Judge Gonzales a keen understanding of the delicate interplay between local, state and federal government. He has had extensive interaction with Congress as White House Counsel and as Attorney General, and he is able to provide effective and timely strategic advice and counsel on legislation and congressional oversight.
For 13 years, Judge Gonzales practiced business law at one of this country’s premier national law firms. With his expertise in oil, gas and energy acquisitions, partnerships and general corporate law, and real estate transactions, Judge Gonzales provides expert counsel on complex business matters.
Judge Gonzales is currently a Visiting Professor at Texas Tech University and Of Counsel in the Trial and Appellate practice group of the law firm of Waller Lansden in Nashville, Tennessee where he works on government relations and investigations and white-collar defense. On January 1, 2012, he will be the Doyle Rogers Distinguished Professor of Law at Belmont University College of Law, where he will teach constitutional and national security law. Judge Gonzales is a member of the American Law Institute and The Chartered Institute of Arbitrators. He also serves on the CPR National Panel of Distinguished Neutrals and on the board of Drexel Metals, Inc.
